All this in a cottage!

This gorgeous cottage has been nominated for the HIA Housing Awards 2014.  It’s a great example of just how much can be achieved in a small space with clever design.

Cottage additions don’t need to be huge to work well.  See what we’ve achieved with thoughtful reuse of existing space and by adding only five metres to the building.

The cottage had an out-dated internal kitchen completely isolated from the living and dining area. The pokey bathroom and laundry to the rear of the home meant passing directly through the wet areas to reach the outside, rather than enjoying a continuous flow from the kitchen to the outdoors.

A dramatic reconfiguration and addition provides a beautiful and practical solution to an unworkable layout.

The first stage of the renovation was to completely reconfigure the badly positioned kitchen and convert it to a spacious bathroom with luxurious open shower and a separate WC – a rare treat for a single-fronted cottage.

To the rear of the home, a stunning addition was then created to house a separate laundry and combined kitchen and dining area infused with a vibrant personality.  Every material and finish was designed to create a seamless flow throughout the property, with matching ceiling heights and solid Cypress pine flooring.

The kitchen now features a striking yet timeless 2-pack finish and spacious walk-in pantry for extra storage.

At its hub, an arresting island provides much-needed bench space and doubles as a bar area where the owner can enjoy laughter and good times with her guests over a glass of wine, all the while keeping an watchful eye on her culinary creations.

The new floor plan allows for a separate laundry, typically lacking in cottages.  This one even boasts a huge floor to ceiling storage cupboard.

The kitchen flows out comfortably to an al fresco area complete with timber decking and a BBQ zone. Housed under the main roof, the outdoor area takes maximum advantage of the space, spanning the full width of the house and a depth of four metres. Perfect for the entertainer!

The result is a cottage that is quite simply an entertainer’s paradise.

In the owner’s words:

“I love the kitchen. I love the bench – the fact that the dining room is all open.  I particularly love the walk-in pantry. I love my new bathroom. I mean, I love everything and there’s not one thing I’d fault!”
