Looking for inspiration for your villa renovation and addition? This project at Unley is something truly special. From the layout to the materials and finishes, every detail of the renovation as well as the large addition has been carefully considered to enhance the villa’s charm while celebrating modern Australian open plan living. The simplicity of the floorplan means it works beautifully for a variety of lifestyles – all you need is to add a touch of your own personality!

While this villa had some exterior charm, it wasn’t reaching its full potential. So the renovations began – a new roof, repointing of the stonework and a fresh coat of white paint to highlight the classic detailing of the façade. A double length carport is a simple yet important addition to the new driveway, and a paved central path leads guests to the new front door. The period style tessellated verandah complete with slate borders completes a very pretty picture.

The WOW factor starts as soon as the front door opens! French limed floorboards throughout, stunning chandeliers and white gloss woodwork create immediate impact. Gone is the out of date back end and in its place a free-flowing kitchen, living and dining area. A huge lobby boasting two walls of massive storage and a true family sized laundry add to the new floor plan to provide a stunning and practical solution to an unworkable layout.

High ceilings, classic white walls and plenty of light throughout the living areas create a new light, bright and very glamorous environment.

The extraordinary transformation continues to the rear of the home. A dated and underused outdoor area was completely demolished and in its place an expansive undercover al fresco was built. This space not only performs wonderfully for everyday living, but is also the ideal venue for entertaining thanks to the luxurious outdoor kitchen.

Hailing from the sixties, the small, pokey kitchen was letting down the whole villa. This space wasn’t sufficient for the modern and spacious entertainer’s kitchen the owners desired, so it was converted into the new family bathroom. The bathroom is the epitome of indulgence, housing ample storage, a freestanding bath and walk-in shower. It also demonstrates how a space can be customised to make it uniquely you. Here, the original kitchen window was redesigned as a fish tank built seamlessly into the wall, allowing you to see straight through into the living area. Because one side of the tank is made from switchable glass, privacy is secured at the touch of a button.

The original timber clad kitchen was dark and dated, and the layout simply wasn’t working with the surrounding living and dining area. The new kitchen design is an entertainer’s dream. Long drawers, overhead cabinets and bench space stretch across the width of the room to the wall of appliances at the end, improving the kitchen’s flow and functionality. Every possible nook is filled with a clever storage option. The balance of dark and white finishes perfectly complement the luxurious granite benchtop to add textural interest and emphasize the luminosity of the white, well-lit space. Through beautiful joinery design and placement, the kitchen area is distinct yet strongly connected to the living and dining area.

Another wonderful feature to this design was the addition of an en suite to the main bedroom. Built onto the side of the home, and at only 1.35 metres deep, it features an enormous shower, large vanity and storage cupboard. The colourful glass mosaic-tiled wall creates a dramatic impact on entering, with the mosaic effect echoed in the shower. The huge mirror ensures there’s ample room for two people to get ready comfortably at the same time.

The villa transformation wouldn’t have been complete without a stunning master bedroom for the owners to retreat to. The previous bedroom was a vision in fading yellow, floral patterns and old-fashioned carpet. The first decision was to pull up the carpet and lime wash the floor – the ideal base for any sophisticated design. Fresh white paint is a simple yet effective way to highlight the elegant detailing and mouldings, and the mantelpiece has been removed to create a modern, edgy look, which is reflected throughout all the original rooms.

No room was left untouched – the light, bright décor made it’s way right through the home. Carpets up, custom built furniture in – perfect new spaces for everyone in the family.

Previously, the rear yard was a very separate entity to the home itself, with no link to the indoors. The solution was to incorporate a wall of cafe doors into the new addition. Spanning almost the entire length of the rear wall, the doors not only allow maximum daylight light to flood into the living area, but also create a seamless visual connection to the outdoors and al fresco area. This was all achieved without sacrificing room for a shed and a lovely rear garden.

This project highlights the capacity for great renovations to enhance existing heritage villas whilst celebrating clever additions to meet today’s lifestyle. Although this Unley villa renovation was quite major – every inch was touched from the front fence to the back fence – there is a wonderful sense of harmony between the new and existing elements of the property – from the inside out. The result is a home that truly celebrates modern living in a heritage home.
